To the Chinese and Chinese-American community of Lexington and the greater Boston area,

It’s great to meet you all! My name is Fiona Young, and I’m currently serving as the Campus Director of the new Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) Academy Lexington. You can find information about it here: https://lexington.aopsacademy.org/. I’m delighted and honored to be invited to speak with you about the new Academy as well as my experiences as a young Chinese-American woman in math and education.
A little background about myself: I am the child of Chinese immigrants; my mother is from Tianjin and attended Nankai University, and my father is from Shandong and studied computer science at NYU. My grandfather is an optics professor at Nankai University and my aunt too is an economics professor there. Needless to say, I grew up around educators and am incredibly passionate about math and math education. My parents live in Stamford, Connecticut, and I attended school in the nearby town, Greenwich. My mother founded and leads the Mandarin Chinese foreign language course series at Greenwich High School.
I was a part of the math team at Greenwich High School, leading my teammates as the first female captain in the school’s history to multiple Connecticut state victories. Then, I attended Harvard University, graduating in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, earning high honors in my department. Post-graduation, I was a PhD student for two years at Cornell funded by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP), where I studied pure math, more specifically, combinatorics. I loved math research, but as an extrovert, I missed people. I missed working with students. So I decided to take a gap year to work with AoPS as the Campus Director, and that’s how I ended up here!
Prior to ending up in mathematics, I wanted to go into education. I’ve tutored and taught kids aged K-12, and at Cornell, for multiple semesters, I was a graduate student instructor for Calculus 1. At Harvard, I was fortunate to win two Derek Bok teaching awards for my TA work. I’ve worked with programs like CTY, Generation Teach Boston, among others, and in 2016 I founded HSYLC Hangzhou, a summer program for gifted Chinese students. You can read more about that program here (perhaps you’ve already heard of it): http://www.hsylc.org/ I also love to write, winning a few writing competitions in my high school years. The students that I tutor in writing have been featured in publications like the Stepping Stones Magazine.I’m excited for the opportunity to talk about our educational philosophy and course offerings at AoPS (why I joined the company in the first place!) as well as describe a bit about my background as a Chinese-American woman in STEM, what I think helped me get into Harvard and Cornell, and why I think pure mathematics is a beautiful subject that all young students should be excited about! I’m really honored that you have invited me to lead this seminar and I want to do everything I can to help the Chinese-American community succeed.

Sincerely,

Fiona Young

Campus Director, Lexington
