CALex Update on Fighting COVID-19 and Supporting Lexington 3/25/2020

Dear Lexington Community,

As the confirmed coronavirus cases rise rapidly every day and Massachusetts has implemented the stay-at-home advisory, we are hunkering down in our homes and our normal life have been severely disrupted. This is a very difficult time for all of us. However, the virus has probably had the most significant impact on the high-risk population and people with less resources. In addition, the local business, such as restaurants, are facing tremendous challenges as days go by. It also gravely concerns us that the healthcare professionals who are at the frontline of fighting the virus are in dire need of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 

To fight the coronavirus and support our town, CALex (Chinese Americans of Lexington) is asking the community’s kind support for the following initiatives CALex is spearheading:

  1. Purchase gift cards from local businesses and donate such gift cards to Lexington residents that are in need
  2. Donate to Fund for Lexington
  3. Collect and source PPE and donate them to hospitals, healthcare professionals and other people with such need
  4. Work with other local organizations such as Neighborhood Brigade and Help Around Town to provide grocery shopping assistance   

As of 25-Mar-2019, CALex has completed the following donations

  1. $1500 donation and $1100 worth of gift cards from local restaurants to Fund for Lexington to be provided to Lexington residents in need
  2. $500 and 50 masks to local organizations
  3. Collected and donated 480 masks (mostly N95/KN95) to Brigham and Woman’s Hospital
  4. Collected and donated 1000 masks (including 500 N95/KN95) along with other PPE to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center 
  5. Collected and donated 200 KN95 masks to Lexington Pediatrics.

The masks received by CALex are a testimonial of broad community support – they came from small donations from a large number of community members as well as shipments from overseas arrived within the past few days. CALex is also actively sourcing PPE from outside of the US as donation to hospitals. 

We greatly appreciate the outpouring of donations we have received so far and will be ramping up our efforts to help fight the coronavirus and support our town. We will provide prompt updates to the community as we make progress in our efforts.
